When you think about summer, your mind may return to summer holidays – sunshine, warmth and outdoor adventures. However, as adults, we must continue working throughout these glorious summer months. Balancing work and leisure can be challenging, so we’re writing this article for you today!

Here are ten ways to make the most of summer while staying productive at work.

Embrace Flexible Scheduling

If your job allows it, take advantage of flexible working hours. Start your day early and finish earlier, giving you more daylight hours to enjoy summer activities.

If flexible scheduling isn’t possible, do not worry, we have other ways to still get outside and enjoy those sun rays while clocking in your 40 hours during the normal 9-5.

Create a Summer Work Space

Set up your work area near a window or outside if possible. Natural light and fresh air can boost your mood and productivity. If you work from home, setting up your computer on your covered deck is a great idea. If you have a lot of phone meetings, take them outside too. You can even go for a stroll around your neighbourhood or block while in a meeting!

Take Short, Frequent Breaks

Incorporate short breaks into your workday to step outside and soak up some sun. A quick walk or a few minutes in the garden can refresh your mind and body. If you work in an office, take your breaks outside of the office. Instead of grabbing a coffee in the office kitchen, can you walk to your favourite coffee shop for a short break?

Plan Outdoor Lunches

Swap your indoor lunch routine for a picnic in the park or a meal on the patio. Eating outdoors can be a refreshing change and an excellent way to enjoy the summer weather.

Encourage your office mates to eat outside too. Are there picnic tables or benches near your office? Suggest that everyone goes outside for lunch to get some fresh air and chat outside the office. Continue to do this and soon it will become a habit for your office.

Incorporate Summer Activities into Your Routine

Schedule summer activities around your work hours. Plan evening beach visits, weekend hikes, or early morning swims to ensure you’re making the most of the season. If possible walk to work, or park a couple blocks away from the office and walk from there.

Incorporating summer activities into your routine will help you get the most out of your days and give you something to look forward to.

Stay Active

On that note, exercise is essential for maintaining energy and focus. Incorporate outdoor activities like jogging, cycling, or yoga in the park into your daily routine to stay fit and enjoy the summer. You can even suggest wellness challenges for the team! Weekly team yoga or a monthly step challenge. These are great ways to bring people together while staying healthy.

Work Remotely

If possible, work from different locations. A day at a beachside café or your cottage can provide a refreshing change of scenery and new inspiration. If you have flexible work options, try working from home a couple of days when possible. If you are primarily in the office, suggest a flexible working arrangement!

Use Vacation Days Wisely

Be sure to use your vacation days! When you use your vacation day wisely around family trips, birthdays or long weekends, you maximize your time off. Let this time be when you fully immerse yourself in summer experiences.

Set Summer Goals

Having specific summer goals can help you stay motivated. Whether it’s reading a certain number of books, visiting new places, completing a 10 km race or learning a new skill, these goals can make your summer feel more fulfilling.

Practice Mindfulness

Enjoying summer while working requires a balance. Practice mindfulness to stay present and soak in the moments you get outdoors. Simple practices like meditation or mindful breathing can help you feel more connected to the season.

Working can be fun in the summer

Balancing work with the enjoyment of summer is all about smart planning and making the most of the time you have. By incorporating these tips into your routine, you can stay productive while making the most of the beautiful summer season.
